Expert tip
Graffiti advertising done right: lessons from 15 years with global brands
After working with some of the world's largest brands on graffiti advertising campaigns across Europe, three things consistently separate the campaigns that compound from the ones that just cost money.
Three things I always tell brands before they start:
- Partner with an artist, don't hire a painter. The right artist brings their community with them. When an artist genuinely stands behind a brand's values or mission, their audience amplifies the campaign organically — social posts, reposts, local press, word of mouth. That multiplier effect is not something you can buy with a media budget. It comes from authentic alignment. And it doesn't necessarily cost more. Choose an artist whose world intersects with your brand's world, and the campaign starts working before the paint dries.
-
Permits are not bureaucracy — they are brand protection. I have seen campaigns from major brands turn into social media disasters overnight: wrong messaging in the wrong neighbourhood, executed without community involvement, and illegal on top of that. The combination is toxic. A €500,000 campaign can be undone by a single viral tweet from a local resident. Permits force you to engage with the right stakeholders — and that engagement, done well, often becomes part of the campaign story itself.
You don't need a skyscraper to make an impact. The largest wall is not always the smartest investment.
- A well-chosen niche wall in a neighbourhood where your exact target audience lives, works, and photographs — combined with a focused social and PR strategy — can outperform a generic high-traffic facade at a fraction of the cost. Precision beats scale. Know your audience's streets better than your media agency does.

FAQ
Everything You Need to Know About Graffiti Advertising
Graffiti advertising uses hand-painted murals and street art to promote a brand on walls, buildings, or urban surfaces — turning high-traffic locations into eye-catching campaign placements.
It's impossible to skip, block, or scroll past. A well-placed mural generates organic social media attention, builds local brand presence, and creates a visual impact no digital ad can replicate.
It's location-dependent and weather-exposed. Unlike digital, you can't edit it once it's painted. That's why choosing the right artist and briefing them precisely matters.
Costs vary significantly depending on format, location, and campaign duration. For smaller walls or eye-level murals, a complete campaign — including artist fees, production, and reinstatement — can start from around €50,000. For larger facade murals in high-traffic urban locations, the wall rental alone can exceed €100,000 per month, with production costs on top. Special OOH murals with 3D elements, light installations, or interactive features are the most expensive format. We recommend budgeting across media placement, artist fees, production, permits, and reinstatement costs as separate line items.
A professionally painted mural can last several years depending on surface quality and weather conditions. Most brand campaigns plan for a minimum placement period of 30 days.
You define the brief and location, select a vetted artist directly from the platform, agree on the design, and the artist handles everything from surface preparation to final execution. If you don't have a specific wall in mind, many of our artists have existing relationships with location owners and can handle that independently. Once the campaign period ends, the wall is typically restored to its original state.
Yes — graffiti advertising almost always requires permits from local authorities and the property owner. Requirements vary significantly across Europe: Paris and Munich have stricter regulations, while Berlin and London have more established frameworks for this format. Allow a minimum of 2 months for the permit process before your planned launch. Some agencies operate without permits, but this exposes brands to significant fines and reputational risk.
Traditional mural advertising uses large vertical surfaces — building facades, gable walls, rooftops — to create impact at a distance. Eye-level murals are a different format: horizontal, street-level installations designed for close-up interaction rather than visual scale. They are particularly effective for campaigns that require audience participation — scanning a QR code, triggering an AR experience, or engaging with a gamified activation. Because they are accessible at human height, eye-level murals create a fundamentally different brand moment: one of intimacy and interaction rather than spectacle.
Special OOH murals go beyond paint on a wall. They incorporate three-dimensional elements that physically protrude from the surface, light installations triggered by sensors, water features, or other structural additions that create an immersive, multi-sensory brand experience. These are the most technically complex and costly format in the graffiti advertising category — typically requiring collaboration between the artist, a production company, and specialist fabricators. When executed well, they generate exceptional earned media and social sharing. Brands like Nike, Adidas, and global beverage companies have used this format for major campaign launches.
Yes — we work with brands, agencies, and marketing teams across Europe and internationally. Our network of vetted artists spans multiple countries, and many of our artists regularly execute campaigns in cities beyond their home base. Whether your campaign is in Berlin, London, Paris, Amsterdam, Madrid, or further afield, we can connect you with the right artist for the location. International campaigns may involve additional coordination around local permit requirements and logistics — we recommend factoring extra lead time into your planning for cross-border projects.
