Expert tip

Guerrilla marketing done right: lessons from 10+ years on the streets of Europe
Expert tip
quotes quotes
After more than a decade executing guerrilla marketing campaigns for some of Europe's largest brands across Berlin, London, Paris, Amsterdam, and beyond, three principles consistently separate the campaigns that generate earned media from the ones that just generate invoices.

Three things I always tell brands before a guerrilla activation:

  1. Scout locations — then trust your creative professional on the ground. The best guerrilla marketing happens at the intersection of preparation and spontaneity. Scout your priority locations in advance, identify high-footfall windows, and brief your creative professional thoroughly. Then let them make real-time decisions based on what's actually happening on the street. Foot traffic shifts. Opportunity shifts. The creatives who do this work professionally are fluid — they move where the audience is. The best campaigns balance rigorous location scouting with the creative freedom to adapt on the go.

  2. Don't go cheap — go strategic. With guerrilla marketing you're often in a grey zone. The difference between press coverage and a fine is not budget — it's judgment. Choose a creative professional with genuine experience in your target city. Executed in the right location, a chalk stencil campaign costs a fraction of traditional OOH and earns ten times the attention.

  3. Think in content, not just in activations. The best guerrilla campaigns are designed with the photograph in mind, not just the activation itself. Position a projection or chalk stencil so that a recognizable landmark appears naturally in the background — and you create an image that does the work of ten media placements when shared. We have produced some of our most iconic campaign imagery not by projecting onto landmarks, but by projecting near them. The landmark gives the image context and credibility. The brand gets the association without the permit complexity.

FAQ

The most frequently asked questions about guerrilla marketing

What are the most effective types of street marketing?

The most effective formats depend on your goal. Mural activations build long-term brand presence. Live painting events create real-time audience engagement. Guerrilla projection advertising delivers high visual impact at night. Pop-up installations stop foot traffic and generate social media content on the spot.

What are the benefits of guerrilla marketing for brands?

It generates organic attention in environments where traditional advertising is ignored. A well-executed street marketing campaign earns press coverage, social media shares, and word-of-mouth — often at a fraction of the cost of conventional outdoor advertising.

How much does a guerrilla marketing campaign cost?

Costs vary significantly depending on format, scale, and location. Chalk stencil advertising on pavements can start from around €5,000 for 10–15 spots, though this depends heavily on stencil size and design complexity. Guerrilla projection campaigns are more investment-intensive — starting from approximately €15,000 per night of activation. Large-scale mural activations in prime city locations require a more substantial budget. Contact creatives directly through the platform for tailored quotes based on your specific campaign brief.

Do I need a location sorted before approaching an artist?

Not necessarily — but having a neighbourhood or area in mind helps significantly. If you know the city district where your target audience is concentrated, share that with the creative professional when briefing them. From there, they can suggest specific spots based on their local knowledge and experience — high-footfall locations, available walls/floor-area, and what's viable from a permit perspective in that area. The more context you provide about your target audience and campaign goals, the better they can advise on where to activate.

Is guerrilla marketing legal?

It depends on the format and location. Mural advertising on private walls with owner permission is fully legal. Some activations are more ephemeral by nature and require no permit at all — chalk advertising on pavements, for example, washes away with rain and is generally tolerated in most cities. Stickering and wheat pasting exist in a grayer area and vary by local regulation. Projection advertising and pop-up installations may require permits depending on the city. The creatives on the platform can guide you through what's needed for your specific campaign.

What is street marketing?

Street or guerrilla marketing uses unconventional, high-impact tactics in public spaces to promote a brand — relying on surprise and creativity rather than large media budgets. Think painted murals, live street activations, pop-up installations, and projection advertising on city buildings.

How many locations can you cover in one night of guerrilla projection?

We recommend planning for 2 to 3 projection locations per night. Every move between spots takes time — the more locations you target, the less time you spend projecting at each one. Quality of activation beats quantity of locations. A well-executed 45-minute projection at a high-footfall spot generates far more earned media than six rushed 10-minute projections across the city. Brief your creative professional on your priority locations in advance and let them make real-time decisions based on foot traffic and conditions on the ground.

Do I need a permit for guerrilla marketing, and does it limit what I can do?

Not necessarily — and a permit doesn't always mean more possibilities, nor does the absence of one mean fewer. With a permit, you gain access to landmark locations and prominent buildings that would otherwise be off-limits — if the permit process is handled correctly. Without a permit, your options shift rather than disappear: chalk stencils on pavements are generally tolerated in most European cities as they wash away naturally. Projection campaigns without permits are possible on less prominent buildings or in secondary locations. Stickering and wheat pasting sit in a greyer area and vary by city regulation. The right creative professional will know what's viable in your target city.

Can my brand project onto a landmark building?

Projecting directly onto a landmark building almost always requires a permit — and obtaining one is rarely straightforward. Our recommendation: brief your creative professional to project onto a nearby building or surface, positioning the landmark naturally in the background of your campaign photography and video. The result is often more compelling than a direct projection — your brand gets the landmark association and visual credibility without the permit complexity. Creative professionals on our platform have executed this approach for brand campaigns, generating exceptional earned media and press coverage precisely because the content looks premium and intentional.

Where does guerrilla marketing work best across Europe?

Our street marketing professionals have executed guerrilla marketing campaigns in the major cities across Europe — Berlin, London, Paris, Amsterdam, Madrid, Milan, and beyond. Each city has its own regulatory environment, cultural tolerance for street marketing, and foot traffic patterns. Berlin and London tend to be the most permissive. Paris and Munich have stricter enforcement but exceptional visual opportunities. For DACH campaigns specifically, permit requirements vary — Swiss cities like Zurich are significantly more regulated than German cities. The creative professionals on our platform work across all major European markets and can advise on what's viable in your target city.
